Why Buy a Custom Saddle

  • A secure, properly fitting saddle reduces the chance of slipping or shifting during work.
  • Service and support
    • Access to a maker who can adjust fit as your horse changes shape with training, weight changes, or aging.
    • Clear warranty, maintenance guidance, and potential repairs or reflocking as part of the purchase.

If you’re deciding whether a custom saddle is right for you, here are quick questions to guide the decision:

  • Does my horse have unique back conformation or a history of saddle-related soreness?
  • Do I or my horse struggle with saddle slip or improper fit with off-the-shelf saddles?
  • Am I aiming for a specific discipline with particular saddle features (horn height, rigging, seat feel)?
  • Do I ride long hours or compete at a level where minor fit differences noticeably affect performance or comfort?
  • Am I prepared for the time and investment involved in a fully custom saddle?

What to expect and prepare for if you pursue a custom saddle

  • Measurements: horse back geometry (withers, spine, back length, width), current saddle fit issues; rider measurements (inseam, thigh position, seat size).
  • Discussion with the maker about your discipline, horse’s conformation, and desired features.
  • Timeframe and cost: custom saddles typically take weeks to months and vary widely by materials, tooling, and builder.
  • Trial, adjustments, and aftercare options (warranty, repairs, reflocking).

All of my custom saddles are hand built one at a time here in my Southern Arizona saddle shop. My saddles are all built on a US made fiberglass tree. I have found that trees are superior to the traditional rawhide wrap. Fiberglass is far stronger, and unaffected by moisture. Our saddles are constructed using US produced and tanned Hermann oak saddle skirting.
