Why Proper Saddle Alignment Matters for Your Horse properly aligned saddle supports your horse’s comfort, balance, and performance. Poor construction or incorrect alignment can create uneven pull under stress. Over time, that pressure can cause performance issues. It may also contribute to spine or muscle damage.

Why Saddle Alignment Matters

There are several ways to achieve proper saddle alignment. Each method has strengths and limitations. A rigging jig can work well in many cases. However, some saddle configurations will not work with a jig.

Another method uses a tape measure and diagonal measurements from fixed points on the saddle tree. The challenge is finding accurate, repeatable points. Both sides of the rigging must also align with the tree. They must be set at nearly the same height.

What Happens When Rigging Is Out of Alignment?

If one side of the rigging sits farther forward, the saddle can pull out of alignment. This can happen when the cinch is drawn snug. Aside from a twisted tree, this is a common cause of saddle fit problems.

Our Laser Alignment Process

At Kent Cannon Saddlery, we use a refined laser alignment process. This helps align each saddle component with the saddle tree. The laser gives us an exact center line down the tree. That reference keeps every component aligned as the build progresses.

The laser also provides a precise 90-degree reference line from the center line. This helps keep the rigging even from front to rear. It also helps set both sides at equal height.

Why We Moved Away from Rawhide-Covered Trees

We take another step to protect long-term alignment. We have moved almost entirely away from rawhide-covered trees. We now use either fiberglass or kevlar covered saddle trees.

The reason is simple. Rawhide-covered trees are vulnerable to moisture. When rawhide gets wet, it softens. When it softens, the tree is no longer held tightly together. The rawhide may shrink back as it dries. However, repeated moisture exposure can cause the tree to flex over time. Eventually, this can leave you with a twisted tree.

The Problem with a Twisted Saddle Tree

A twisted tree throws the entire saddle out of alignment. In most cases, repair is not worth the cost. An exception may be a saddle with sentimental or historical value.
