Handmade Leather Knife Sheaths

Long before knife sheaths became a regular part of my leatherwork, I was building practical cases for the tools people carried every day—pliers, pruning shears, phones, multi-tools, and more. Each project taught me the same lesson: a good leather case should fit properly, ride comfortably, protect what it carries, and stand up to years of honest use.

Over the years, I have made sheaths for fixed-blade hunting knives, folding pocket knives, machetes, swords, and Leatherman-style multi-tools—including sheaths made for service members deploying to Iraq. Whether the piece is compact and simple or built for a large working blade, every sheath begins with its intended use.

Built for the Knife, the Belt, and the Job

A well-made sheath is more than a cover for a blade. It should hold the knife securely, protect the edge, draw smoothly, and remain comfortable throughout the day. I consider the knife’s size and shape, handle profile, carry position, belt width, retention needs, and how the sheath will be used before choosing the construction.

Available Sheath Styles

  • Fixed-blade sheaths for hunting, ranch, camp, and everyday working knives
  • Folding-knife sheaths sized for convenient belt carry
  • Pancake sheaths that hold a pocket knife close to the body
  • Multi-tool sheaths for Leatherman-style tools and similar gear
  • Large-blade sheaths for machetes, swords, and other specialty pieces

Leather, Finish, and Personal Details

KC Saddlery’s pancake knife sheaths are made from vegetable-tanned leather selected to suit the size and style of the sheath. Depending on the model, leather weights range from approximately 4/5 ounce for smaller sheaths to 8/9 ounce for larger versions. The leather is conditioned with oils and protected with a non-volatile sealant to help resist water intrusion.

Choose from available colors and tooling patterns, or contact me to discuss a custom sheath. Options may include decorative tooling, a retaining strap, belt-loop configuration, and other details appropriate to the knife and intended carry. Because every knife is different, custom work may require accurate measurements, a tracing, photographs, or the knife itself to ensure a proper fit.

Why Choose a Handmade Leather Sheath?

Mass-produced sheaths are made to fit a general category. A handmade sheath can be planned around your particular knife and the way you carry it. The result is practical western leatherwork with careful fit, dependable function, and the character that develops only as quality leather is used over time.
